What is SIBO?
SIBO stands for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. It occurs when too much bacteria moves into the small intestine from the large intestine or colon. The small intestine is meant to have small populations of bacteria. The causes of SIBO vary from antibiotic, food poisoning, motility disorders, and abdominal surgeries. Common symptoms of SIBO include bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation or alternating bowel habits. Individuals may also have abdominal pain associated with trapped gas in the intestines. Heartburn and burping are also common.
Individuals with IBS should be screened for SIBO as it is commonly associated with this condition. Treatment modalities range from unique antibiotics to herbal therapy. Dietary modification is also recommended to help manage symptoms and prevent future relapses. SIBO can be a challenging condition to diagnose and even treat. The underlying cause, whether temporary or chronic, should be addressed. Diagnostic breath tests are the most common way to determine if an individual has SIBO. The tests detect gases produced by the bacteria and/or archaea. It is important you see both a gastroenterologist and a dietitian if you have this condition.
